Linn 343 Loudspeaker: Unifying Rare Qualities

A loudspeaker designed around Linn’s revolutionary Pistonik drive unit technology from the outset. One in which Linn’s authentic proprietary technologies converge to project an unshakeable illusion of reality.

The down-firing placement in the loudspeaker cabinet of a Pistonik bass system, drives unit behaviour and supporting electronics to work as a single acoustic system.

The result is low-frequency performance with remarkable scale, texture and composure — bass that feels intrinsic to the recording, even at the lowest notes.

The aft module was designed to mechanically isolate the electronics and silently cool them. The isolation occurs by reliance on a robust, yet flexible, three-point spring mounting system.

The result? Protection of the integrity of the music signal, from source to sound.

A new moulded composite cabinet whose continuous, hard-edge-free form supports wide dispersion, rock-solid imaging and an exceptionally wide listening area. Its stiffness and density help maximise acoustic volume, house the bass system and preserve the slender proportions that give 343 its poise and distinctive visual lightness.

The wonder of 343 is how completely it changes what a compact loudspeaker can be: technically explicit, visually calm and emotionally immediate, projecting an unshakeable illusion of reality from improbable proportions.

343 is available in two variants.

Exakt Integrated is the most self-sufficient model, with Utopik power supply, Exakt digital crossover, Power DAC architecture, Organik DACs and Adaptive Bias Control amplification housed within its integrated module.

The Passive with Active Bass (PWAB) variant shares the same Pistonik 6” and 8” drive units, and Utopik and Power DAC for the bass system, with the 343 array comprising upper bass, midrange and tweeter units driven instead by external amplification.

Linn 343 is the compact reference loudspeaker that fits into any home.

Description

This is 343: the first loudspeaker to be designed around Linn’s revolutionary Pistonik drive unit technology from the outset.

One in which Linn’s authentic proprietary technologies converge to project an unshakeable illusion of reality. A reference loudspeaker, concealed inside a form so compact and poised that its achievement appears  improbable.

343 isn’t simply a loudspeaker that sounds “big for its size”. It is technically explicit, visually calm and emotionally immediate, delivering performance without imposition and presence without bulk.

The wonder of 343 is how completely it changes what a compact loudspeaker can be: reference performance beautifully encapsulated in a form fit for any home.

Pistonik for 343

When the Pistonik motor system was introduced in Linn’s flagship 360 loudspeakers, it revolutionised what could be expected from Linn lower-frequency performance.

In 343, that achievement takes on new significance. It is the first loudspeaker to be designed around Pistonik from the outset, with the cabinet, down-firing bass architecture, drive unit behaviour and supporting electronics evolving together as a single holistic acoustic system.

Linn has long understood how to extract remarkable bass performance from compact forms. Where paired-driver architectures can create advantages through combination, Pistonik gives 343 those qualities at source: a fundamentally more capable 8” bass driver with the exceptional linearity, vast excursion and precise control required to deliver serious low-frequency performance directly from a single unit.

The down-firing arrangement is how this is integrated within 343’s enclosure. Positioned close to the floor, this driver uses a highly reflective acoustic boundary to deliver omni-directional bass energy readily and efficiently into the room, whilst its orientation allows the full mass of the loudspeaker to work against the reactive energy of the bass unit.

The result is bass performance with the depth and authority to give 343 its remarkable sense of scale, and the precision to preserve its composure. Bass feels intrinsic to the recording: clean and assured, lower frequencies arrive with immediacy and texture.

The 6” Pistonik upper bass driver brings the same principles of low distortion, linear performance and controlled output into the frequencies where much of music’s body, weight and presence is formed. Together, 343’s lower-frequency drivers carry around 70% of the loudspeaker’s acoustic workload, meaning the benefits of Pistonik are heard across the heart of the speaker’s performance — from the deepest frequencies through the vocal range, and beyond.

The Cabinet

With so much technology to accommodate, 343 required a cabinet design that could bring reference performance, integrated electronics and neat proportions into a single fully resolved form. Its purpose is acoustic, visual and mechanical…

…and its first act is one of disappearance. If you close your eyes, you may find it hard to identify the physical location of the 343.

The continuous cabinet — free from hard edges — allows sound to leave the loudspeaker more cleanly and consistently, reducing the small diffraction effects that reveal the position of the box in the room. Reflections arriving from the room retain more of the same spectral character as the direct sound itself, helping the image remain stable, spatially precise and rock-solid across an exceptionally wide listening area. 343 releases the recording into the room as the speaker itself recedes into the space around it.

The form also gives 343 its distinctive visual lightness. The cabinet sits perfectly poised on pointe atop the stand, its lower edge undulating with the sweeping shape of a sine wave. There is a sense of balance to it — almost a suspension — as though the loudspeaker is resting featherlight on its points of contact.

That same sweep is integral to 343’s bass architecture. The cabinet’s curved lower body is shaped as much by beauty as the acoustic and mechanical demands of Pistonik, creating the volume and geometry required for the down-firing 8” drive unit’s exceptional performance whilst preserving the slender front baffle. It’s a beautiful solution: technically rational, acoustically beneficial and visually graceful.

Central to realising this form was the cabinet material itself. A glass-fibre-reinforced moulding compound gives the cabinet the stiffness and density the design requires, enabling thinner walls whilst preserving structural integrity and performance. This allowed Linn to maximise the cabinet’s overall acoustic volume, and accommodate its bass system and electronics module, thereby ensuring that 343 could deliver reference-level performance and remain compact enough to sit comfortably in any home.

The Module

At the rear of 343, concealed within a curvaceous cowl that completes the flowing form of the cabinet, is the module which drives the loudspeaker. A  quiet expression of the same design principle found throughout 343; advanced technology is gathered into a form that remains calm, compact and complete.

This suite of proprietary Linn technologies works in concert across the complete loudspeaker system, converging to protect and deliver the music signal from source to sound — from the first digital instruction to the final movement of air.

Each technology matters in isolation; in 343, their effects multiply to deliver something exponentially more. Together, they form a chain of custody for the music signal, protecting timing, pitch accuracy, power delivery and acoustic behaviour until the loudspeaker itself begins to fade from the listener’s attention.

Building on Linn’s history of protecting delicate audio signals from interference — in keeping with the principles which underpin Sondek LP12 — the module is mounted using a three-point spring system which isolates the electronics from the cabinet. This serves as a true isolation system, mechanically decoupling the module from the cabinet to preserve the performance of the system it contains.

Its passive cooling system operates in complete silence. Using advanced thermal modelling, Linn optimised a custom heat sink; a triangular-prism aluminium arrangement with internal fins that draws air up through the module like a chimney, carrying heat away from the electronic components and out through the machined vent at the top of the loudspeaker. From the outside, this vent is a small clue: a quiet hint at the power and precision held unobtrusively within the slender body of 343.

343 Brings Together a Rare Set of Qualities

A rear module, concealed within a curvaceous cowl, mechanically isolated on a three-point spring mounting system and passively cooled in silence. It gathers the electronics that drive and control 343, protecting the integrity of the music signal and minimising loss and distortion from source to sound.

A Pistonik bass system, developed for 343 from the outset. The  down-firing placement of the Pistonik drivers, and advanced digital instruction unit, work as a single acoustic system.  The digital instruction module is completely isolated and protected on a three point spring mounting system, yet seamlessly transmits to the Pistonik  drives. The result is low-frequency performance with remarkable scale, texture and composure — bass that feels intrinsic to the recording.

The wonder of 343 is how completely it changes what a compact loudspeaker can be: technically explicit, visually calm and emotionally immediate, projecting an unshakeable illusion of reality from improbable proportions.

343 is the compact reference loudspeaker that fits into any home.

The 343 array continues the acoustic philosophy established by 360; drive unit behaviour, cabinet form, and dispersion, are resolved as one integrated acoustic discipline. The compact 19mm tweeter preserves wide dispersion higher into the audible range, while a precisely profiled waveguide blends seamlessly into the cabinet form, to maintain smooth dispersion at high frequencies. The midrange and tweeter share the same diaphragm material and acoustic character, helping the transition through the crossover region feel continuous, unforced and tonally consistent.

At the top of the cabinet’s baffle, the array gives 343 its face and focus. Tweeter, midrange and upper bass are visually and sonically integrated into the loudspeaker’s front surface, with surrounding curves tailored to the behaviour of each drive unit. The trim connects 343 unmistakably to Linn’s design language and to its heritage, reaching back to the precision and character of Sondek LP12. It is both technical and expressive; a controlled acoustic surface, and a quiet signature.

343 releases the recording into the room with unusual stability and ease. Voices occupy the air with human scale, low frequencies arrive with texture, transients have speed without glare, and detail appears without being spotlit. With distortion reduced, timing preserved and dispersion controlled, the loudspeaker becomes less audible as an object and the performance holds the room.
